the removal of organic precursors of disinfection by-products (dbps), i.e. natural organic matter (nom), prior to disinfection is considered as the most effective approach to minimise the formation of dbps. trihalomethanes (thms) as the main group of dbps are categorized and considered to have the potentiality of increasing the rate of liver, kidney and cns adverse effects. this study which presents experimental results, aimed at the reduction of organic matters using the powdered activated carbon (pac) in the process of coagulation in koot amir water treatment plant in ahwaz city. the affect of two coagulant such as ferric chloride and poly aluminum chloride (pacl) with pac in removing total organic carbon (toc) considering different parameters such as concentration and the kind of coagulants, concentration of pac, ph changes and contact time has been surveyed. the results of this study clearly indicated that maximum removal in optimum ph of ferric chloride was 40% while 44% toc removal was achieved at ph 6.5 for poly aluminum chloride coagulant. in use of powdered activated carbon with optimum ph and concentration of ferric chloride, toc reduction will increase with increasing pac concentration and up to 90%. also by addition of powdered activated carbon at similar conditions together with poly aluminum chloride 87% reduction of toc was occurred. poly aluminum chloride was more effective in toc removal than ferric chloride and pac adsorption as coagulant aid improved toc removal efficiency.

full textPerformance Evaluation of Combined Process of Powdered Activated Carbon-Activated Sludge (PACT) in Textile Dye Removal
Introduction: The Powdered Activated Carbon Treatment (PACT) has been proposed as an alternative in wastewater treatment and wastewater biomass protection against toxic substances. This study aims to evaluate PACT performance in treating dyes, acid orange, and remazol brilliant reactive blue. Materials and Methods: This empirical- applied research was carried out in pilot scale in which differ...
full textComparison of natural organic matter adsorption capacities of super-powdered activated carbon and powdered activated Carbon.
We examined the natural organic matter (NOM) adsorption characteristics of super-powdered activated carbon (S-PAC) produced by pulverizing commercially available, normal PAC to a submicron particle size range. The adsorption capacities of S-PAC for NOM and polystyrene sulfonates (PSS) with molecular weights (MWs) of 1.1, 1.8, and 4.6 kDa, which we used as model compounds, were considerably high...
full textImpact of Climate Change on Organic Carbon Removal Efficiency in Jajrood Catchment: From Dam to Water Treatment Plant
Background and purpose: Jajrood River is one of the major drinking water supply rivers in Tehran, so, the effects of climate change on its quantitative and qualitative resources are highly important. This study aimed at investigating the effect of climate change on organic carbon removal in Jajrood basin. Materials and methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, CanESM2 general circula...
full textRemoval of trace organics from water using a pumped bed-membrane bioreactor with powdered activated carbon
A pumped bed-membrane bioreactor (PB-MBR) combining powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption with bacterial degradation was studied for the purification of tap water, spiked with 2 mg/l of phenanthrene, to sub-ppm levels. The feedwater was supplemented with nitrogen and phosphorous to reach a COD:N:P ratio of 100:10:1. PAC concentration was maintained at 5 g/l. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) flat-sh...

ABSTRACT Introduction: Due to environmental and human health concerns related to humic acid (HA), mainly leading to disinfection by-products creation, removal or reduction of this matters is a necessary for drinking water suppliers. Based on resistive economy map road and move to self-sufficiency, it is necessary to produce our need in water treatment industry. One of the main co...
